Welcome!!

My name is Elisha Jewell, a Senior Music Major at LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis, TN. In October of 2017, My love for reading, libraries, and community drove me to pursue this project. I decided to write and submit a proposal to the Vice President, Dean of Students, and Dorm Administer. To my surprise, it was approved! I believe that this project aligns with our strategic road map, Destination 2023, in pursuing excellence through information literacy that will support our retention and academic success for not only our first year students, but all of our LeMoyne-Owen scholars.

The collection officially opened on February 20, 2019 in the Saxon Dormitory located at 859 Saxon Ave, Memphis TN, 38126. I hope you can enjoy this collection as much as I do!

Problem Statement

According to The Jenkins Group, an independent book publishing service, in 2003 a survey was conducted and was concluded that one-third of high school graduates never read another book for the rest of their lives, 42 percent of college graduates never read another book after college, 80 percent of U.S. families did not buy or read a book last year, 70 percent of U.S. adults have not been in a bookstore in the last five years, & 57 percent of new books are not read to completion.

Objective

The objective of this project is to primarily give students access to both fiction & nonfiction reading materials in close proximity of their living quarters to increase reading, enhance literacy & strengthen vocabulary within our students.

Solution

With the help and partnership with the Hollis F. Price Library, LeMoyne Owen-Dorm Administration, and the Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., a library satellite will be placed in the LeMoyne Owen Saxon Dormitory.
